Behind The Lens

Location

I'm lucky enough to live in North Queensland, Australia in a town called Townsville. We are a mixed bag of human beings with many Traditional Owners still living in the area, many Defence force families and lots of University students. I'm a little bit of an explorer when it comes to locations (having to be careful of Crocodiles) however this is a beautiful spot near my home and is one of our beautiful wild life nature reserves.

Time

I am a bit of a Golden Sunshine girl, and especially in Winter here in North Queensland.....so I only ever shoot of an afternoon. This would have been around 5pm. I love being able to capture as much of the location in my portraits as I can and am totally addicted to looking for light.

Lighting

This is my daughter, she is my little muse. Really we just go to play in many of the locations that I use, albeit dressed like a princess! I let her guide me and just follower her around as she explores her environment. I think children see things very differently to us. I always seem to be able to capture some kind of sun movement or burst as she wanders. I was watching her explore the water and all of the sudden the clouds moved and this burst of light came through. I only ever use, me and my camera. Natural light if you look for it will always show up somewhere.

Equipment

I use a Canon 5D MIII and my lens is a Canon L series 70 - 200

Inspiration

I love grass. I love the way grass can change colour in seconds depending on the movement of light. The water was an added extra. Light and movement is always inspires me to take shots such as this one. I watch my subject and wait and then just "see it".

Editing

I'm a heavy editor with my style of photography. We have such rich colours here in North Queensland, so the best way to utilise that is to go with it and enhance what is already there. I use photoshop and have created my own actions. I always bring across in Camera Raw and fine tune in there first.

In my camera bag

I"m a bit of a stickler for keeping to what I like. I always have my 70 - 200 lens with me and I would imagine I use that the most. However for close up movement I love the faithful 50mm it is crisp, clear and light. One of the other beliefs I have is...... less is best. You can have all the equipment in the world and still not be able to see the light. The equipment won't help you to find what you can't see first.

Feedback

I always think that if you have the right locations, you can capture amazing moments with your subject. Understanding how the light effects your location is key to being able to capture it. Layering in the landscape is important too, as it allows the light to move and dance around which then enhances the colour.
