Behind The Lens

Location

This image was shot at PRP studios in Essex. A great studio with loads of backdrops, an Aladdin's cavern of props, more lights than Wembley stadium and even better models on their register.

Time

I rented the studio and model with another photographer so that we could double the time and have an assistant with a "Photographer's eye", a highly recommended method. I used one strobe with soft-box on the left and my buddy with a reflector slightly behind and on the right. Had to give the model's superb shape some separation.

Lighting

I wanted minimal in this shot. With that in mind, the model is dressed minimal (nude), the props are minimal ( a sheet and a coffee mug) and the lighting is minimal (one flash and a reflector). Soft lighting gave me plenty of contours and allowed me to avoid blowing out the sheet.

Equipment

I always shoot with Nikon. The quality of the glass is fantastic. This image is shot with a Nikon D4, Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 at 48mm, ISO 100 (keep the ISO as low as possible to get the best possible quality), shot at 1/200 sec.

Inspiration

This model, Jodie, has a wonderful ability to be completely at ease in front of a lens. I wanted to create the image as if it was a break in the shoot (tea break) and Jodie nailed it. It looked to me as if she was in a different World, her mind wandered off in peaceful contemplation of something very natural (other than doing a studio shoot). Jodie also has some incredible shape to her body, so there was no need for her to hold a pose, it was all so natural. I just needed the separation behind to show the form and the image presented itself. I had the camera in B&W mode, but I ALWAYS shoot in RAW, so it was recorded in colour. It suited B&W to my eye, so that's how I presented it.

Editing

There is some post processing involved. I use the latest Photoshop CC, it's B&W conversions are just beautiful. Just a little cropping behind the model, due to the reflector being a little in shot, but it didn't need much more.

In my camera bag

Again, Nikon! D4 and D7100 bodies. My lens range is expensive but gives incredible quality. I shoot everything from macro to landscape, so I have: Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 (landscape), Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 (hardly ever off a body), Nikon 70-200 f2.8mm VR (Rolls Royce of a lens), Nikon 50mm f1.8 (incredible depth of field) and a Nikon 500mm f4 (for the wildlife and sports). Like I said, it's an expensive line-up and it took me many years and ohh so many broken piggy-banks to put this collection together, but the quality is superb. However, with equipment like this, I have no excuses. Any bad images are totally my fault, nothing else to blame!

Feedback

My tips for getting an image like this are keep it simple. Work with your model. Let him/her know what you are after and most of the time, your model with know exactly what to do. Communication is so important, keep it light, be friendly, crack a joke or two, Never invade personal space unless you ask first and only then if you are invited to do so by your model. Show your model the back of your camera, if you think you've got a great shot, show it off, it helps the model to get relaxed and strive for a better shot. Ask the studio owner for help with the lighting, it's theirs and they should know how best it works. Burn pixels... This is the digital age, so don't be afraid to take loads of images. Move your position, move the model, move the lighting and reflectors. Very often, the slightest changes give the most dramatic results. Lastly, go easy on yourself. You won't buy a camera and get incredible images time after time from day one. Learn what your camera will do, learn how to make it do what you want it to do and have fun! Unless you are one of the chosen few that earns a living from taking photographs, it's all just for fun, so have FUN...
