Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on Lake Tamblingan in the north of Bali, Indonesia. We had just trekked through the jungle and were then treated to a canoe ride across the lake.

Time

After an early start and a few hours of trekking, this was taken late morning. The clouds had rolled in by that time giving the surface of the lake a beautiful steely look.

Lighting

The natural lighting worked on the day!

Equipment

Canon 350D efs 18-55mm

Inspiration

This day was particularly special and one that will stick in my memory out of the many days we were travelling and I wanted to take some interesting shots to capture the moments of the day. When I look back at this photo it brings back the memory of the beautiful cool, soft water, the relaxed vibe of gliding along in the canoe and the wonderful local woman rowing.

Editing

I only have a very basic processing program that came with my laptop but with it I dropped the saturation to make it black and white, put the contrast up a little bit and used selective focus with a small amount of vignette.

In my camera bag

Just my canon 350D and efs 18-55mm. I have a Praktica 35mm too with a few lenses which I picked up cheap on eBay.

Feedback

I don't have any expensive equipment, technical knowledge or sophisticated editing programmes but I think if you get the composition and and the light right, you can get a great shot without those things. Patience is important. Waiting for the right light and if you are photographing people (not posing), animals or moving objects, just observe and feel when the time is right to take the shot. Also accepting that you may have to take many before you get the right one.
