Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at a horse racing track in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Time

I tried different times of day, however I found the lighting on this shot, around 5pm, to be the most suitable.

Lighting

Only natural light was used and I wanted a softer type of photo, so in order to not have harsh shadows especially on the horses I had to wait for the sun to be at not a high point.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7000 with a Nikon 18-200mm lens at 18mm.

Inspiration

I would occasionally go to see horse races as I find them amazing. Being so close to the track and watch the horses run past so fast and so close is really an indescribable experience. I wanted to capture that feeling from such point of view.

Editing

The photo was shot in color and then post processed to black and white. I also lowered the highlights since the sky was a bit overexposed. Additionally, I lowered the clarity in order to give it a softer look.

In my camera bag

For this type of work I try to keep as little as possible in my bag so I do not have a lot of weight on my back. Usually a body and a 18-200mm lens, or a fx body and a 24-70mm lens.

Feedback

Freezing this type of action from so close requires patience. There are only a few number of races where horses run that close to the railing, and you only have literally a couple of seconds as they run by you. A fast shutter speed is also needed in order to stop action, so you also depend on lighting if you want to keep a low iso.
