Fees Must Fall 2

Stellenbosch University, South Africa. The near climax of the Fees Must Fall movement which swept the country's tertiary education institutions, had a particularly poignant taste in the former apartheid university of Stellenbosch. One of the many, but more active, leaders of the movement is seen here with his back turned to an attentive and eager crowd blocking the road in front of the institution's oldest building. He is facing top-level managerial staff of the university for the umpteenth time in the span of a few weeks imploring them to listen to the movement's requests and demanding them to take the matter seriously. The student is close to tears after a week of sleepless nights as the movement mobilised to occupy physical space on campus in the form of protest. His voice is hoarse, his tune is stuck on repeat and his unstoppable quest for change is meeting an unmovable bureaucratic wall. His expression is framed by the shoulders of 'the men in black'. Private security forces hired by the university to keep students in check through intimidation...it hasn't worked. The photo is not great, here the context does all the work.
