This photo was taken in Northern California where I live. This is in a park near me. The girl in the photos is my daughter who isn't always excited as I am to do photo shoots.Time
This was taken at golden hour ( Approximately 1 hour before sunset).Lighting
I love the "golden hour" and that small 10 minute window right after the sun sets. This was shot at golden hour. Though the sun was still pretty how coming from the left of the image. I slightly underexposed and toned down the highlight in Lightroom to be sure i could retain the detail I wanted.Equipment
I shot this with my Canon 5Dii. The lens I used was a 70-200mm L 2.8. No Tripod or flash was used.Inspiration
Before I became a mother it was people. Mostly the elderly with lots of character on their faces and hands. Since becoming a mother its my children and children in general. Everything is pure and unique reactions with them. You are in their world, not the other way around.Editing
Always! As much as I try to get things right in camera, a huge part of my art is how I edit as well. I love deep rich colors and creamy light. I generally start in Lightroom doing the minor adjustments, then I move on to Photoshop. In photoshop I break down the parts of an image editing each one individually ( ie background, subject, eyes, skin) creating layers and masking it off till each area looks the want I want it to.In my camera bag
A white card, 85mm, 70-200mm, and thats about it. I keep things simple and easy on a normal shoot.Feedback
When working with kids, let them be who they are. I wanted that perfect photo of my daughter and found myself getting frustrated when she wouldn't pose just so. When I made her sit for this shot she made this face and pouted. Instead of correcting her I seized the moment and got this shot. It is by far one of my favorite shots of her to date and perfectly shows her personality. Seize the moment. Don't try to make it "perfect". Children do beautiful and fun things on their own. You just need to be read and willing to see it.
