Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Eisenberg an der Raab, Burgenland, Austria, near the Hotel "Das Eisenberg" on the porch of our room.

Time

Date and time: May 3, 2016; 07:51 PM

Lighting

As one can see it's close to sunset and I had to be quick taking the photo because the situation was obviously not going to last that long. In the end the capture is hand-held, no support, just point-and-shoot.

Equipment

Camera used was Canon PowerShot G11, 6.1-30.5 mm f/3.5-5.6, at 13.8 mm in aperture priority (A) mode. No tripod used.

Inspiration

After a rainy day I was simply waiting for any opportunity. Being in our hotel room a glance out of the window made a quick decision necessary. Stepped out and fired a series of bracketed exposures. In the end I selected the photo with an exposure correction of -2 stops at f/5.6, 1/160 s and ISO 400. Under-exposure proved beneficial with respect to structure in the clouds.

Editing

I'm always shooting RAW. So, the photo was developed with ARC in Photoshop CC 2015. Next I used a preset in the HDR collection of Topaz Adjust 5 (Heavy Pop Smooth). Structure in the clouds was accentuated using Topaz Detail. Denoising was done with Imagenomic Noiseware, sharpening with Topaz InFocus.

In my camera bag

I'm carrying the Canon PowerShot G11 with me any time. When I'm definitely out for taking photos there's either a Nikon D90 or D300s with lenses 12-24 mm, 18-105 mm, and 70-300 mm in my backpack.

Feedback

My only advice can be that you've to try it out once you're confronted with a situation like this. If you don't like the result the Delete button will be the last resort.
