Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from the Y-Fan hill overlooking Clywedog Dam Mid Wales https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clywedog_Reservoir The dam wall seen at the bottom of the shot is the Bwlch-y-Gle dam wall. The Pony was incredibly interested in what I was doing and was constantly nuzzling me and resting her head on my shoulder which resulted in this photo bomb.

Time

The shot was taken late evening as the sun was setting and was quite windy and starting to get cold, I was on my way to the top of the hill to take a shot from the trig point and realised that I was not going to get there before the light went.

Lighting

The lighting was natural golden hour and was picking out the hills and valleys with a slight golden reflection on the water.

Equipment

Equipment used was Canon EOS 7D Mkii and lens was a Canon efs 10-18mm, tripod used was a Manfrotto 055 taken using a remote shutter switch.

Inspiration

Best laid plans of mice and men comes to mind for this shot and was accidental regarding the pony. I originally was on way to the top of the hill to take some shots of the dam at sunset with the trig point in the foreground but realised that I would not get to the top before the light went so decided to take some shots three quarters up the hill using the large rock for foreground interest when the pony arrived which actually made for a better shot that the one I was planning.

Editing

The shot was originally taken raw and post processed in Lightroom 2015cc I used two grad filters one for the sky and the other for the fore ground, sky grad was used to lower exposure and highlights, foreground grad was used to heighten exposure and push the shadows up, I also used two radial filters one for the ponies head to heighten exposure and clarity and one for where the sun was to lower exposure and highlights, HSL was also used to increase saturation in the orange and green and finally used dehaze slightly +10.

In my camera bag

My equipment is carried in a rucksack with a small travel tripod attached to the side, camera Canon eos 7d MKii, I have six lenses, Canon efs 10-18mm, Canon efs 15-85mm, Canon zoom ef 100-400mm L is MKii, canon 50mm 1.4 prime, Sigma 105mm dg macro hsm, and a Sigma 18-250mm dc macro hsm. I always take my rucksack with me now after learning the hard way.

Feedback

Wales UK is known for often having four seasons in one day weather wise as I live 14 miles away from the location it was just a matter of waiting for the right conditions and taking off, next time I will go a bit earlier to get originally planned shot who knows there maybe a pony on the hill again I hope so. The only advice I can give is to plan your shots but if they don't work out go with the flow this one definitely falls into the latter but turned out to be a very memorable evening which for is me why I like photography so much.
