Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at Eastern State Penitentiary located in Philadelphia, PA. It was inside one of the cells that visitors were not allowed to enter so I had to shoot through the bars.

Time

We were at the prison for a few hours and this particular shot was taken about 5pm back in August 2013 so I still had natural light to work with.

Lighting

The lighting for this is coming only from right above the chair. The prison itself is dimly lit in most of the areas.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi, 1/13 sec. f/5.6 18mm at ISO 800

Inspiration

There is not a lot of furniture left in the prison. As we walked by I saw the bright red of the barber's chair and the light coming from directly above it. I also really liked the decay of the room itself. I thought it would make a great shot.

Editing

The only post processing done for this was tweaking the brightness in lightroom.

In my camera bag

Much has changed since this was taken in 2013. I now carry my canon 5d mark iv and usually have a 50mm 1.8 and 24-70 2.8 in my bag or on the camera most of the time.

Feedback

I would say to always be looking for great lighting, and colors. This photo has some great texture in it as well which I am personally always fond of. Take a look for shadows that can enhance a composition and just always be ready to shoot.
