This photo was taken in Kaycee, WY, in early May 2016. My daughter (on the right) and her friends were heading to prom, and we figured, with a car this cool, we'd better have a cool picture to do it justice!Time
Late afternoon--it was cold, windy and had just hailed about an hour before this picture, so the clouds in the sky made for a terrific backdrop. Awfully chilly for the girls in their dresses though!Lighting
We have this picture in color as well, but with the clouds in the background so pronounced, it just pops so much better in black and white, as does the car's darker shade. There was no lighting used for this picture except what nature provided!Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D7100, Nikkor18-140mm lensInspiration
The kids were looking to take some unique and fun prom photos, since, as ranch kids here in Wyoming, the chance to dress up comes few and far between! The car belonged to one of the boys' grandfather, who generously allowed the kids to drive it around town for prom, so we wanted a photo that really showed off the car as well.Editing
I edited in Lightroom using contrast, sharpening and exposure tools, along with NIK Silver Efex Pro 2 filter. In my camera bag
Ironically, this photo is unique for me, as I wasn't on a horse when I took it! Most of my images are from ranch life, or high action events such as rodeos, so I usually just have one camera body and lens with me. I have a Nikon D7100 and D7200, with a vaierty of lenses, but most of the time its the nikkor lens above mentioned that gets put to use, since its a relatively portable size.Feedback
These kids had great attitudes about posing for pictures, which, with teenagers, isn't always the case! So I felt lucky to be able to have such willing subjects. This was actually just a spur of the moment picture, nothing particularly planned ahead, and it just worked out perfectly, and ended up being the favorite of all the shots we took that day. I guess my advice would be step out of the box and shoot when your gut instinct tells you to!
