Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at The University of Wolverhampton while I was finishing my degree in Fine Art & Photography.

Time

I took this photo in the afternoon in the studio using the black scoop.

Lighting

I was drawn to the use of single light exposure in order to create a dramatic yet simplistic pose.

Equipment

The shot was taken handheld using a Hasselblad H3D ISO 100 80mm f/2.8 1/180 with a modelling light.

Inspiration

I am a realist painter and I had been viewing Vermeer's "Girl with the Pearl Earring" and I was experimenting with chiaroscuro within portraiture because I am inspired by the dramatic contrast between light and dark within the imagery.

Editing

I changed the photo from colour to monochrome and tweaked the contrast slightly.

In my camera bag

Normally, these days I use either my Sony A99 or Sony a7r ii cameras.

Feedback

In creating this type of image where I am focusing on a particular area of the image that I want to direct the viewer toward, I use f/1.4 - f/2.8 because I don't want everything to be in sharp focus, which reflects my style of painting and image-making,
