This photo was taken on Smoker Island off the coast of south west wales. Skomer Island is a nature reserve.Time
This photograph was taken mid afternoon. Me and my friend walked around the island and had been to the wick the day before. The wick is part of the island that is famous for it's puffin colony.Lighting
The light was intermittent because of the cloud. I waited for the sun to come out from behind the cloud and waited for the puffins to interact. This happened after about half an hour of watching the puffins.Equipment
I used a sigma 150-500mm lens with a canon 5D. This was taken handheld. The shutter speed was not as fast as i'd have liked but i think it worked well for the image in the end.Inspiration
The trip to Skomer was to go and get shots of puffins. It was early in the season so I'll be going back in the middle of June. We were to early for the fish in mouth shots but about the right time for the puffins to build nests and also start mating.Editing
I don't normally put that much effort in to my post processing because I like to get the best results from the camera. This was the first time I'd really gone out with a plan and was looking for shots. The post processing was quite small. I made sure the exposure and contrast was about right not to over power things. I reduced the highlights and upped the shadows a little bit. I finished off with making the background a bit darker to help with the puffins being more dominant.In my camera bag
I don't really have anything special in my camera bag. I have a flash, tripod, monopod, filters, spare batteries and a couple of lens.Feedback
Be patient and don't rush to take the image the first time something happens. Let things play out and be selective with your shots.
