Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Spokane, WA during a rooftop shoot with my uncle.

Time

This image was created roughly 5pm in the afternoon after the harsh sunlight disappeared, but before the warmer tones lit the city.

Lighting

The goal was a sophisticated look with this fashion shoot. There was some patchy cloud cover over Spokane that day, which made for some incredible natural light in the nooks and crannies of the city. This spot was almost overlooked, but the texture in the background and the soft cool tones brought by the buildings around this spot created the exact look I was hoping to find.

Equipment

Canon 6D, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II,

Inspiration

The inspiration was to get on top of a tall building and shoot a fashion series in the city. My uncle and I had been talking about it for a while, and he was able to make it happen through a friend of his. It was such a neat experience start to finish.

Editing

I don't typically do a lot of editing on my photos, but this shoot needed just a tad more sophistication, which were easily brought about with some soft color grading. The color grading really set the tone and contrast in this image and the mood really became apparent.

In my camera bag

My pack usually consists of my 6D, 70-200mm lens, my 50mm 1.4, my macbook pro, my Canon 430EXII speedlight, a crappy tri-pod and extra batteries. Typically I try to pack light, only carrying a backup camera body for time intensive shoots.

Feedback

Definitely try to keep the date of the shoot flexible if possible. We almost had to post-pone because of rain, and at the top of the building the wind was harsh even when below was calm. Also, take your time, look for the small soft patches of light and really don't be afraid to fail. Chances are, on a shoot as laid back as this one, you'll have a number of photos that you just don't like. There were a couple of those occasions on this shoot, but the good shots wouldn't be nearly as accomplished without those less-than-stellar shots.
