As a gardener, one of the things I love about this time of year is watching plants spring to life as the ground begins to warm. Their tenacity and optimism, especially in the face of inevitably wild weather swings, is, I think, that much more appreciated in a country where winter can seem interminable, and in a city where, on May 1st, the high is 9C.
Here, the first leaves of a tomato plant struggle to shed their seed and begin to grow in earnest (indoors, for now).
