Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Al Whathba in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Time

Afternoon around 4:00pm

Lighting

The afternoon sun in the UAE always seems to more dramatic, warm orange and pinks colours are painted everywhere.

Equipment

Nikon D7000, 70-300 Nikon Lens, no tripod, no flash

Inspiration

Every winter Camel races commence, as part of a photography group (Wednesday Group Photographers) we are always looking for opportunities to document these races, this is part of the UAE culture. We drove for about an hour and half from Abu Dhabi city to Al Whathba, to find them training on the track in preparation for the next day's race. There was a hugh herd being lead by one little man walking swiftly back to the camp, the dirt from the heaving traffic created this cloud-like fog at the camels feet, the light was perfect and I took the shot.

Editing

I did minimal post processing, added some vibrancy, little cropping, little contrast, brought out the shadows, turned down the high lights

In my camera bag

Nikon D810, Nikon 70-300 and 24-70 lens.

Feedback

Be prepared for the unexpected, not all your shots are going to be perfect, try to be proactive, observe, put yourself in position for a shot before it happens. Never go to the desert alone, always carry food and water and comfortable shoes.
