This photo was taken of an 'unknown' horse at the time at Dykman Stables near Cambridge, Ontario. I later learned that her name was Lizzie.Time
It was an overcast day with bursts of light escaping between clouds so patience was key.Lighting
Something I have recently learned and have been experimenting with is underexposing hots on purpose to enhance slight light detail in post processing. This definitely worked on this photo.Equipment
This was hand held shot with a 70D kit lens. Nothing fancy going on here.Inspiration
Inspiration for this shot is just the love of horses and purposely looking for where the light falls.Editing
Post processing was a must for this shot to bring out her face as it was very dark. Also, the natural background was very muddy looking so opted out using a mask creating a dappled background from three colours that were already in the horse. Carefully sharpened some of her mane for interest sake but not all of it.In my camera bag
Still consider myself a newbie so I am using just the purchased kit. Keeping it simple and learning what I already own before I start spending money and getting ahead of myself. There is so much to learn with what is in your initial kit that it just makes sense to learn what is at your fingers tips.Feedback
Always look for where your light is coming from. Even if it is grey it is still coming from a certain direction. Refracted light is still bright! Second thing that I do is I like to pick one or two subject ideas for each outing of what I am going to shoot and not be 'spray and praying' for a good shot.
