The detail captured in the sky and foreground is impressive. The glowing red hull of the boat leads my eye to the golden lit horizon. A moonlight photo could yield interesting results. Great work

Location
A place close to home, the River Taw Estuary basin near Barnstaple, North Devon, England. Close to the sea, full of wildlife, rapidly changing weather/ ambient light. Said to have it's own microclimate.Time
Late afternoon/early eveningLighting
Wait for it to change in your favour.....always. If you've chosen a location, and travelled, choose also to sit and wait. The scene always changes, and so does the activity. The Golden Hour.Equipment
Hand held. Carry a graduated, neutral density filter set to offset any high dynamic-range from a must-have-that-shot scene.Inspiration
The colour of the boat, knowledge of tide-times, reflections opportunity from the mud, textures of the mud. That light blue patch in the sky appearing in the extraordinary stormy cloud. The weather forecast.....heralding the approach of the Atlantic Storm, Storm Imogen. Light was bound to become dramatic. Even a chance of heavy, driving rain to provide more photo opportunity.Editing
Yes. I shoot in Manual, producing large sized, Raw files, always using the camera's auto-bracketing. This minimises time spent changing settings/ maximises the chance of capturing the image I choose. At home, I have all the metadata at my disposal to create the best representation of my subject. Adobe Lightroom, single pass through available variables, no layers. In my camera bag
The minimum. I try to visualise the image I'm chasing before I leave home. Weight isn't welcome as I tend to wander distances. 18-55 zoom kit lens has given me good results, always carried. Then, one other lens, dependent upon the visualised/ intended subject matter. A Gorilla Pod plus cable release, is a lightweight carryable if very low light is likely.Feedback
Get to know as much about the location as possible.....there's often little need to visit beforehand, as the Internet is an excellent prep tool. Visualise your perfect shot, but be prepared for the real challenge. Choose the light you want, or at least narrow down the likely variables. No use going for golden light during the majority part of the day, eh? My next challenge is a misty, low contrast, almost monotone, crashing wave scene at a local, small, isolated bay. The weather forecast, tide timetables, surf condition forecast, wind direction are all essential bits of info. The frustration of not getting the ideal combination makes me imagine the likely, alternative scene.
