This photo was taken in my studio in March. Vivica is a traveling model who came to the studio to do a workshop that we were sponsoring and I took the opportunity to work with her.Time
This photo turned into my favorite photo from the work I did with this model. The photo was taken in the late afternoon with natural light that comes into the studio from windows that face to the west. This was at the end of a day of workshops and photo sessions when we had a spontaneous moment.Lighting
This photo was created by the natural light coming from west facing windows in the late afternoon. I love shooting here at this time of day because the warm light and pale shadows create very dramatic images.Equipment
I shoot with a Canon 7D and an 17-70 mm Sigma 2.8 lens. This image was shot with me standing above the model on a small step ladder.Inspiration
I have seen images done with flowers covering the model before but I wanted to do something a little different by creating a sensual artistic nude image but anonymous. The model's red hair was in stark contrast to the bright yellow of the sunflowers. I chose sunflowers because I like their brilliant warmth and that the fact that they come in all sizes which, I think, adds to the texture of this photo.Editing
I shoot everything in RAW format so I processed the photo in Lightroom using some basic adjustments for highlights, contrast, whites and blacks. I boosted clarity a little and did a little sharpening. I did not do anything in Photoshop other than crop and Unsharp mask do bring out some of the fine details. In my camera bag
My primary equipment is my Canon 7D. I also sometimes carry my standby 50D in the bag if I need a second camera and don't want to have to keep changing lenses. I shoot primarily with a Sigma 17-70 2.8 lens, but also have handy a 50-105 Canon lens and a Tamron 70-300 zoom. I prefer natural light so I rarely carry any flash gear. I do have a portable set of 160 mw strobes that I can throw in the car if needed.Feedback
I started doing photography because of my love of nature. My portrait and art photography is constantly inspired by that love. I am always looking for ways to bring together the natural beauty of my portrait and art subjects and the nature that surrounds us. I think the challenge is to be spontaneous and use the natural elements and light that are at hand creatively you when you are shooting.
