This Federally protected species is responsible for many beach closings... and garners much resentment from locals along the coast.
I am part of a volunteer group of Plover Monitors that attempts to ensure the safety of these wonderful birds.
Within hours of hatching, the tiny chicks are scurrying all over the beach to feed. This is why beaches are closed, or restricted. When they sense danger, the simply go to ground, and 'disappear'. 4x4's, kite surfers, and even children chasing the chicks among many other man made hazards have all played a part in this species demise.
Last year, of the 8 nests in the state of NH, we successfully fledged 12 Chicks. NH F&G considers this a success, as meeting the 1.5 fledgling per nest percentage. With each nest averaging 4 chicks, I truly feel we should be able to fledge more.
