Behind The Lens

Location

Butterflies are attracted to the sedum in our front garden bed at home, if the plants aren't eaten by the deer first. This was one of those late summers that I got lucky - and grabbed the camera....

Time

It was early afternoon and there was a bit of a cloud cover that day so I concentrated on the wings

Lighting

No added light - cloudy days don't cast harsh shadows so I always like those for shooting if it's not better morning or saturated late afternoon light. Here I had to wait for the subject to show up :)

Equipment

Hand held Canon EOS Digital Rebel - short focal length (f5.6) on IS0 200 under natural somewhat cloudy light - always the best if you don't want the shadows during the middle of the day.

Inspiration

These guys hang out seasonally when there are flowers - and they are so beautiful, delicate, and fleeting...

Editing

Just a quick sharpen up in Photoshop

In my camera bag

Canon EOS, with a 10-24 mm Tamron wide angle lens (recommended by the local camera shop before they closed up for good), as I am normally shooting a building, landscape or architectural detail; also a Joby 3k gorilla flexible tripod.

Feedback

Patience, as always. As a photographer you are either in the right place at the right time or waiting for the right light or trying to find the right shot - this one was a bit of all three.
