Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken at the Melbourne Zoo in Victoria, Australia. The South American parrots are kept in a large aviary that was built in the 1800s so this is shot through wire.Time
It was taken on a Summer (southern hemisphere Summer) afternoon.Lighting
Natural lighting with colour adjustments done in Lightroom to bring them back to the way I remember them.Equipment
Canon 5D mark iii camera, Tamron 500mm lens.Inspiration
I had decided to spend a day at the zoo by myself with the 500mm lens (usually have to share with hubby). Photographing the animals that are in enclosures and shooting through wire and glass in order to make them look like I shot them in the wild or from within enclosures was my plan for the day.Editing
Lightroom. Adjusted the colours to bring them back to true as, if I remember rightly, I was being lazy and had the camera on auto for the day, and the colours were a little washed out. The natural light was very bright that day.In my camera bag
Camera, usually a Canon macro 100mm lens and a Canon 50mm fixed lens. Spare batteries, spare cards, insect repellent, sunscreen, hat, water bottle........ shoulder strap and wrist strap. iphone adapter for SD card in case I want to check if something will work in lightroom or if I have to retake it.Feedback
The main tip I have for animal photos is use the longest lens you can get you hands on and shoot at the highest quality raw. Even if you don't have a super long lens, if it is a high quality photo, you can crop it in to a great image.
