Location
This photo was taken in the garden of my holiday house on the south coast of NSW Australia.Time
The photo was taken at about 11.30am from memory. I waited for the sea mist to disappear.Lighting
I wanted the flower to represent paradise with the bright vivid colours being highlighted by the canopy of the trees. I always use natural light in my photos so I positioned myself in such a way that I was able to catch the light through a branch to highlight just the flower and create that contrast.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 60D using an 18-55mm lense. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I spent my life coming to this place. It's in a tiny fishing village off the highway. If your not into fishing your usually don't know about it. The area is filled with beauty everywhere you look. Unspoiled beaches, km's of rainforest and lush rolling hills. It is the definition of paradise and I really wanted to take a single shot that summed it up. I had to wait three days for this flower to bloom like this but it was so worth the wait. The vivid colour really does sum up the intense beauty of the area.Editing
I took this photo 3 years ago and can't fully remember but in photos like these I would usuall add brightness, adjust the blacks and highlights. In this image I think I may have added a curves layer as well.In my camera bag
I now never leave home without my Canon 60D and my canon prime 24 - 70mm f2.8L USM II it's so versatile. I would love to add a Canon Prime 70-200mm f2.8 to my kit.Feedback
Find a location that really inspires you. Thos place and the surrounding areas is a place I have grown up loving it's a happy place for me and I think that really comes out in the image. I usually shoot at dawn and dusk as the lighting is softer and more tonal but this particular image because it was under the canopy of the tree had to be taken a little later when the sun was higher. Also have patience. If I had of photographed this flower on the day I found it in my garden it would not have been nearly as beautiful but I had patience waited three days and I'm so glad I did.
