Behind The Lens

Location

Outer Banks, North Carolina. I'm not sure which pier this is, but I believe that we were staying in Rodanthe.

Time

Early morning. I had gone out for a walk on the beach and took many sunrise pictures that day.

Lighting

I was very lucky with the lighting. I had only been using a digital camera for around two years and was still shooting on auto. The sun through the pier kept my exposure at the right spot to avoid underexposing the details of the shadows in the sand.

Equipment

Kodak z612 6mp point and shoot camera.

Inspiration

I love taking pictures of sunrises and sunsets, as I'm sure you'll see if you visit my portfolio. This shot intrigued me because of the many lines running through it. The shadows draw you in to the sun and the splash of the wave, the pier runs across pulling you into the depth of the picture, along with the footprints. They all combine to make the picture interesting but not cluttered.

Editing

I don't remember if I did or not (it was nearly a decade ago). If so, it was 'auto smart fix' on Photoshop elements.

In my camera bag

Currently, a Nikon d3200 with a 18-55 mm lens, a Nikon d90 with a 55-200mm lens, batteries, chargers, lens wipes, extra memory cards, pen, notebook.

Feedback

Always have a camera with you. Even if it's a point and shoot or your phone. I've seen photographers turn their noses up at pictures taken on a phone. To that I say, you would be amazed at the pictures you can take with a phone nowadays. I've gotten so many of my pictures just by having a camera with me when chance presents an opportunity. My other advice is shoot, shoot, shoot. Learn what your camera can and can't do by doing it. Experience is the greatest teacher.
