Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from one of the small Venetian bridges. When you are crossing the “canale” and looking along it, you must take a picture even if you have the worst camera and you are the worst photographer in the world. This took place in 2009 during our family car trip from central England to Italy.

Time

That was late afternoon, I remember. We reached our hotel, unpacked, refreshed after rather long car trip and took a train from the Mestre station to Venice. It was not a sunny afternoon and even a noisy storm went through Venice.

Lighting

There was no bright sunlight – the light was consistently spreading through the walls of buildings and water like from a softbox. There were no sharp shadows anywhere but there was something beckoning in this view.

Equipment

Funny. It was an old small Kodak – my first digital photo camera. Thanks to it, I (we) have so many memories. The picture was made free hand.

Inspiration

As I have mentioned, it was something engaging in this narrow Venetian water street with boats parked against the very unique colourful walls and mysterious green water.

Editing

I was never happy with results of my camera use. When I am looking at the view I can see what I want to take from it but when the photo is done there is something missing. Once, I started to use processing apps to change some of my photos and I became happier. In this case I have used a free HDR software to change some colour elements and tonality.

In my camera bag

My bag is not what you’d expect. From last year, I use Sony HX300 and it is an improvement for me now. I have plans for completing my bag for closest future. I have got some directions for equipment, but I think I always was equipped with my own way of looking.

Feedback

I would not dare to give any advice to somebody on my amateurish level but one is important to me: the own way of looking at things, as I mentioned above, and trying to notice what others do not always can see.
