Location
This photo was taken in Kelowna, British Columbia. The breeding grounds for this species of bird is at one of the ponds at our Kelowna Landfill. These areas are presently threatened as they plan to expand and renovate.Time
I find the best time for photographing wildlife is early mornings. Animals are pretty active at this time.Lighting
Lighting is so important. I find mornings are the best time for shooting as the light is not so harsh and also does not cast large shadows. The lighting for this photograph was natural lighting with no flash necessary.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D7100 camera body and a 70-300 mm lense f/4.5-5.6Inspiration
Nature and wildlife are the two areas that I chose to work from. While researching local wildlife in the area, I came across this unusual species of bird and wanted to photograph it for myself. I started with the research and then scouting their nesting areas and this is the picture that I took.Editing
There was very little post processing with this picture. A little cropping but for the most part, I was pretty happy with it.In my camera bag
The equipment that I normally carry is my Nikon D7100 camera. I have 3 lenses that I use depending on the given situation. My 50 mm f/2.8 is my portrait lense, my 15-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 is my wide angle that I use for photographing landscapes and then my 70-300 mm f/4.5-5.6 for photographing wildlife. Manfroto tripod as well as a monopole.Feedback
Birds are probably one of the most difficult subjects to photograph. You need a ton of patience not to mention a lot of practice. A good steady tripod is a must to help with image stabilization. But the rewards are worth the wait. If you want a nice reflective picture like this one, you need to photograph with no wind. Wind blows across the water creating a ripple effect destroying any chance of a good reflection. Photographers take a lot of pictures of the same subject but you want yours to stand out from the rest. Look for that something special.
