Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the O’Siyam pavilion in a community park in downtown Squamish, B.C. The park is designed for community events ie. concerts, movie nights, multicultural performances, etc. The pavilion has a stage where performances take place. The photo shows the interior of the roof of the structure which is designed to resemble waves, as we are an oceanfront town.

Time

I am an early riser and am frequently out roaming about town with my camera looking for the perfect light, etc. anytime after 6 a.m. This picture was taken on Sept. 1, 2012 at about 7:30 am. It’s a perfect time to take pictures....very few people around, and great early morning light.

Lighting

I feel lighting is a , if not, the, key component of good photographs. The more familiar you are with the area in which you are photographing, the better you will understand the importance of the right light, ie the one you are looking for to make your picture great.

Equipment

First of all I must admit....not much.....a very basic point and shoot Sony DSC-T50. On this camera in the program mode, I can adjust limited exposure, ISO, white balance, sharpness and contrast. It is very basic and about ten years old. I normally fiddle with the controls until I get what I’m looking for. I shot with the camera hand-held and took at least 12-15 shots before I was satisfied that I might have an acceptable one. I never shoot in auto mode except when trying to get that silky effect on a waterfall. For that I shoot in night mode (during the daytime). It works satisfactorily.

Inspiration

I belong to the local photo club. One of our photowalks was downtown. When I got to the park the pavilion was what attracted me, and the most interesting part of it , to me, was the interior of the roof. I didn’t have much time that night so I went back the next morning to take a better shot than what I had.

Editing

To be honest, I can’t remember. At that time I was only using Picasa so I may have tweaked it with that. Generally, for a photo like that one, I do very little tweaking.

In my camera bag

In my camera case, I have a with a lens cleaner and a spare memory stick and battery. My tripod is always available. ie. in the car. This shot was taken hand held.

Feedback

When you are working with very basic equipment (or even advanced equipment), it is advantageous if you are familiar with the area in which you will be photographing. Have a sense of the light at different times of the day, as well as the amount of activity in the area that may complicate what you want to do. If you have something specific in mind you may have to go out several times, at different times of the day to know when the conditions are optimal for what you want to shoot. Take a lot of pictures, at different angles, experiment until you are happy with the result, and always allow yourself enough time.
