Behind The Lens

Location

After climbing an unnamed New Zealand mountain to 1700m I was able to capture this setting of fog filling the below valley.

Time

This picture was taken at the end of days hunting in the mountains of New Zealand. As a result of waiting for the fog to slowly fill the Valley, we had to decent the mountain in the dark.

Lighting

Lighting was great as it had been a clear, blue sky all day. Unfortunately, we missed the "golden hour" as the sun was setting behind us and filling the valley with shadow

Equipment

Since we planned for a big day walking I chose to bring my small point and shoot lumix TZ25 to save weight. This was a good decision in the end as we walked 30km throughout the mountains.

Inspiration

Right place, right time. After looking for deer all day I saw an opportunity to catch the fog filling a valley with beautiful blue sky above. This made me think about the people below the fog line experiencing the limited visibility, while I was still in clear skies.

Editing

I tried to lower some of the shadowing as the sun was setting behind the mountain we were standing on.

In my camera bag

I have recently purchased a Canon 100d and have a 18-135mm lense attached. This combination is based completely on weight. The 100d is a very small, compact DSLR, while the lense give me a good range of magnification. I used to use a 55-250mm which was ideal for animals but limiting for landscapes. Ideally, I would like to carry two lenses to cover this issue but due to the amount of area I walk hunting I need to minimize weight and bulk. Also, I carry around a small compact tripod so I can utilize slower shutter speeds at the end of a hard day on the hill

Feedback

Walk to unusual places so you can be at the right place at the right time to capture unique scenes.
