Behind The Lens

Location

This was actually a very cold day probably in late October on the National Harbor in Washington,DC. However the sunlight hitting the tall feathery grass and the light blues and pinks in the sky made it seem warmer. I didn't expect the ordinary scene to shine in the photo but that is the magic and thrill of capturing such a scene.

Time

Around 6 p.m in the evening. The wind was cold but i managed to hold on to the camera for a shot.

Lighting

Natural light especially at dawn or dusk is unmatched - I shot in manual mode with slightly reduced exposure and the colors you see are all natural with no manipulations.

Equipment

Canon SX40 (my steady stable companion)

Inspiration

We originally wanted to take harbor pictures, the sand, the wheel and the blue color of the ocean. We walked on after the usual photos in search of a restaurant and found this scene in all its glory in front of the mandarin. The golden sunlight and the gentle feathery grass got me hooked.

Editing

None except for the slightly reduced exposure.

In my camera bag

My Canon SX40 always. Its light, takes amazing pictures and never let me down.

Feedback

Early mornings and dusk are the best for such shots. Try visiting new local places that don't seem like great options but when the light is just right an ordinary scene can be transformed. I like to say that - every thing in nature is worthy, you just have to wait to capture its essence.
