Behind The Lens

Location

The Roman Arenas in Bucharest Romania. The perfect concert Venue in my opinion, in Bucharest. 10th of December, Accept concert. The concert took place in a heated tent installed and designed specially to be able to host for about 2000 people, but without the tent installed the location has a higher capacity.

Time

Evening, around 09:00 PM . They played right before Accept.

Lighting

Well, the lights were good as they usually are at large venues. And there were also natural lights, white, yellow, that do help when you edit the photo. Nothing is worse then tinting out the blue from your photos. I rarely use a flash at concerts. I feel like the flash can take part of the art from the photo, especially whe being used at a venue with such good lighting.

Equipment

Nikion d7000 with a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8, lens my all time favorite. I use it for anything and everything.

Inspiration

Well, I practically glued myself to the stage during the bands performance, as the person in the picture, the bass player is a friend of mine and besides that, the band, 9.7. Richter are singing a really good old school heavy metal, that reminds me a lot of Texas Hippie Coalition, US Heavy metal band I like, so I really wanted to do them justice and capture as many good shots of them, as I could especially because I could stay in the PIT during the whole performance. But I think that the fact that i knew the bass player, and we are good friends made this picture better. I think that the feelings you have when you are taking a photo are being reflected in the image afterwards. I was feeling proud and wanted people to see what I saw through my lens at that concert and that was the accomplishes musician in front of me.

Editing

I use Lightroom for editing so I used saturation to make it black and white, removed the highlights as in the moment I took the picture, the spotlight behind him was right upon his back and accentuated the blacks a little.

In my camera bag

When it comes to bodies I like Nikon a lot so I usually have with me Nikon D750, Nikon D700, Nikon D600. Lenses: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8, Nikkor AF-s 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII and Nikon 85mm f/1.4G AF-S Sometimes a flash, but I do not use flash that much so it is usually a rental, either Nissin or something that I can use with the camera. I also use a Blenda, but only for outdoor photo shoots and usually for trash the dress, or that epic light during the sunset or sunrise, in combination with a flash, or not.

Feedback

First of all, do not stress ! I used to get stressed all the time because of the fact that at every concert or event, there were going to be photographers far more advanced than I was (and still am, we are learning every day) and with a far more advanced equipment then me. I started with a d3100 and then moved to the d7000 then started to use professional cameras. But honestly, it does not matter, just learn your camera, love it and make it your best friend. Have in mind that your time in the spotlight will come if you just dedicate enough love and time to your passion for photography. If you know the settings and know how to adjust them accordingly to the lights and movement on the stage there will be no problems in taking an epic shot.
