This black morph snail kite has just plucked a snail out of the water. Not really....it is just a boat-tailed grackles, so please excuse my humor. These apple snails are the main food source for snail kites, but they are very plentiful this year (a great thing), so the grackles and other species have also been feeding on them. I had never seen a grackle land on the water before or stick its head below the surface to catch a snail, so I was surprised to see this happen. www.wklein.smugmug.com
