Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Auckland Zoo in Auckland New Zealand.

Time

This was taken at about 9am. The tiger was out for an early morning stretch of her legs before the crowds started to gather for feeding time. She walked right up to me and just stood there while I took some photos of her in all her glory.

Lighting

Being early in the morning the enclosure was fairly dim but the area where the tiger decided to walk had just enough natural light coming through that I didn't have to do anything more than increase the exposure by one stop to get this look.

Equipment

This shot was taken on a Canon 750d with a Tamron 150-600mm at around 150-200mm.

Inspiration

I love all animals but big cats are probably my favourites. I had only recently got into photography and really wanted to capture a powerful image of a Tiger walking out of the darkness. Most of all I wanted to show the beauty of this wonderful creature and make it look like it's not in an enclosure.

Editing

Very little work was done in lightroom. A digital crop to get the look I wanted and a little colour correction.

In my camera bag

Normally I have a Tamron 16mm-300mm as my general use travel lens. I normally have a speedlight and a 1.4x teleconverter.

Feedback

Patience and timing is everything. I spent weeks of traveling to the zoo sitting in the same spot waiting for the tiger to walk into the right area where it looked the least like an enclosure. The most important thing is don't get discouraged if you don't get the shot you want straight away. Just keep trying and eventually with a little luck and patience will get it.
