Behind The Lens

Location

Smoky Mountain Air Show @ McGhee Tyson April 16-17, 2016 Team Aeroshell The Aeroshell Aerobatic Team is one of the world's top civilian formation aerobatic teams. With over 25 years of experience, they provide an action-packed demonstration filled with lots of smoke and noise, provided by their AT-6 Texans. All proceeds from the 2016 Smoky Mountain Air Show will go to HonorAir Knoxville, an organization that flies veterans from McGhee Tyson Airport to Washington D.C. so that they can view the various veteran memorials, all free of charge.

Time

This photo was taken around 12:38 pm. I never go anywhere without my camera and could not resist taking photo's of the Aeroshell Team as they were warming up the day before the airshow.

Lighting

It was a beautiful day so I did not have to do anything out of the ordinary.

Equipment

This photo was shot on a Cannon Rebel T5i with an EFS 18-200mm lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I am a member of EAA17 (Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 17). We as a chapter were involved in helping with the airshow. I love taking photos of all types of aircraft. I tried to capture the rush of what was going on all around us as we were setting up while the different aircrafts were preparing for the next days air show.

Editing

I did not do any post-processing.

In my camera bag

I like to always have at least two camera's ready to pull out and start shooting with. I use both Cannon Rebel T5i and T4i. I outfit them with different lens so I don't have to stop what I am doing to change out. I generally put the EFS 18-200mm lens on the T5i and EFS 18-135mm on the T4i. I also have other lens that I have in the bag as well. I attach the hoods to the camera strap so they do not take up room in the bag. I make sure I have plenty of backup batteries along with SD cards. I also have a small tripod that will extend out if I so choose to use it.

Feedback

The best advice I can give anyone is try to familiarize yourself with your surroundings before you start taking photos. This will help you to think ahead of what type of shot you are trying to go for. It also helps in case their are big crowds that show up. This way you won't find yourself spending valuable minutes to get to the area you want and miss the shot. Airshows are exciting and fast paced. The more you think ahead the better off you will be and the photo's will show it.
