Behind The Lens

Location

I love to travel and travel photography is a good part of the photography I do. I am an amateur but I have been taking pictures all my adult life. This was taken on my first trip to Alaska while traveling in the Inside Passage. This kind of scenery is almost constant while anywhere in Alaska.

Time

This was taken at 8-9 PM. The sun was below the opposite horizon, but in the summer it stays light quite late. This was just one of many great images that night.

Lighting

The lighting was perfect, with nothing out of range.

Equipment

I took this with a Nikon D300, which I'm still using, with the D70 kit lens 18-70 mm. I wish I had used a lower ISO, maybe 400 or less, but I did not check the settings and shot it at 800. This is hand held, but braced on a rail.

Inspiration

That night, after dinner, I went up on deck and was blown away by the scenery on our starboard side facing east. It seem that everywhere there was an image to record.

Editing

This is the original JPEG processed in an early version of LR from a NEF file. I must admit my sharpening and noise reduction knowledge was quite poor at that time. I think that file could be processed with much better results.

In my camera bag

I hate changing lenses when traveling and opt for a heavy load, carrying a D700 with a 70-200 and a D750 with a 24-70. If I think I will need more reach in good light I will use a D300 for its crop factor. I try to use the D300 only with low ISO's.

Feedback

Use the lowest possible ISO, use a polarizer when applicable, shoot at the edge--the edge of weather, the edge of night and day, the edge of water and land, etc
