Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken inside the Monastery of San Francisco located in Lima, Peru.

Time

This photo was taken around 3pm. I was on a small guided tour of the Monastery. Once I came across this very picturesque hallway I knew I had to wait to get the perfect shot. I waited for about 20mins, till there was only one women walked towards the end of the hallway.

Lighting

I wanted the light coming in from the window to guide the viewers eye through the photograph. I also wanted the stones in the foreground to not be in shadow.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D800e, with a AF-S NIKKOR14-24mm F2.8G lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

While on the small guided tour I was just trying to find the right photograph. Once I came around the corner I knew this hallway, with how the lighting was coming through the window would give a very dreamy feel to it.

Editing

I usually bracket my photographs so I can get the best lighting for all areas on the photo. So I merge two photos together so the over lighting of the picture would be smooth and moody. I converted the image to black and white, and adjusted for contrast.

In my camera bag

My equipment varies depending on what type of images I plan on taking. What environment I will be in, etc... But I normally have my Nikon D800e camera, with AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm F2.8G lens. And my AF-S NIKKOR 50mm F1.4G lens.

Feedback

Its very easy to get carried away just clicking the shutter button all the time while doing travel photography. But the best way I have learned is to get the jittery shutter finger out of the way quickly as possible. Go out for a small walk and just shoot anything, so you can get more familiar with your settings of the camera for the location you are in. Once you get the done, start looking for areas that have the best lighting and then find your composition around that.
