Location
This shot was taken along the central part of the west coast California near Pismo Beach. Pam (my wife) and I stopped by a cliff side park area to enjoy the view. I had my camera with me and we soon noticed the gulls were flying by and landing near us on the cliff's edge so I snapped a few shots of their comings and goings and was lucky enough to capture a couple of nice shots..Time
This is my favorite of the pictures I captured that day. My wife and I were on the second day of a little coast getaway in March of 2015. Our day started at the Sandcastle inn at Pismo Beach, and we had spent the morning driving and exploring the coastline when we happened up this spot. We thought we would sit and relax while taking in the scenery. This shot was taken a few minutes before noon on a fairly cloudless beautiful day.Lighting
The sun was directly overhead and was very bright, I was noticing the contrast in the birds and the ocean and the way the feathers were catching the light with a little glow along the tips of their feathers. I tried several settings, but this was the best without resorting to using flash and frightening my little friends away.Equipment
For this shot I used a Nikon D-3200 with a kit lens.Inspiration
I had had my camera for a couple of months when we took this trip. I had mainly wanted to capture an ocean sunset which I was lucky enough to do and anything else would be a bonus. I was in the right place at the right time with a camera in hand.Editing
I used Lightroom Six for post processing. In my camera bag
In my bag I carry the Nikon D-3200 with 2 Nikon lens' a 55-200mm and an 18-55mm. I'm new to Photography so my equipment is few and far between. So I make do with what I haveFeedback
If I have learned anything about trying to shoot sea birds is that a great deal of patience is required. A bird that is landing is moving slower and affords more opportunity for a cleaner shot. Though I will say that shots that I have taken with fast wing movement also have a nice effect. The most important thing I found is not too get grounded in place, move around for better angles and lighting opportunities and just have fun being outdoors doing what you love.
