Location
In our master bathroom, as my youngest, Elliot, was enjoying one of his "splash baths".Time
Around 6 or 7 pmLighting
It's a corner tub the has a large window above it in both walls, so there was plenty of natural light still flooding through.Equipment
I shot this using my Nikon df and the Tamron 24-70 f2.8. No other equipment.Inspiration
I love watching Elliot play in the water. He is my fourth but none of my other kids have had such a vibrant enthusiasm for water as Elliot has. Aside from that, being a photographer, my eye kept getting drawn to how languidly the water was constantly flowing around his skin and how beautifully alive it looked. I wanted to try and capture that in some small way.Editing
I processed it entirely in LR. I did some sharpening, color adjustments (I wanted to bring out the subtle blues and greens of the water to contrast his skin tone and especially the reds and magentas of his mouth and the scratch on his cheek (he fell off the trampoline a few days before). In my camera bag
The Nikon df body, along with a 50mm f1.4 manual lens, a 35mm f1.8 af, the Tamron 24-70 f2.8, and an old Minolta srt 200 film camera with a 50mm f2 lens on it. I also carry a couple of different lens hoods, and a ring flash that mounts onto my lenses.Feedback
I had to play with shutter speed a bit to get the water the water to look the way I felt I observed it when I was just sat watching him. Really id say just play around and try different settings. And if you see lovely even light coming in through your windows, get out that camera at once! And don't be afraid to position yourself 'weirdly'. I had to balance atop the edge of the bath for this, which I felt was safe since I had a wall I could lean on. So I guess I'm saying find a balance between not putting yourself and your gear in serious danger, and pushing yourself to figure out different vantage points.
