Behind The Lens

Location

I was walking around London with my family on a short layover during my summer vacation. It was my first time in London and I was a teenager dipping my toes into photography. This was the one and only picture I took of Big Ben that day.

Time

We had been walking around the city for some time, making our way from Buckingham Palace to the London Eye. I was getting a little exhausted as the sun was beading down on us. But as I saw Big Ben in the distance, I just knew I had to take a picture. The clock struck 12 right as I took the picture, which made the image, in my opinion, more striking.

Lighting

As a teenager who didn't know much about lighting, equipment, or photography in general, but the sun appearing directly behind Big Ben gave it an ethereal like glow.

Equipment

This was taken on a Sony digital camera and that is just about all I can remember about it as the picture was taken over 10 years ago, on Jun 28th, 2009 to be specific.

Inspiration

I was sightseeing in London and Big Ben is one of those iconic buildings that I really wanted to see. When I saw it from below, I wanted to see more detail and took a picture to really see it in all its glory.

Editing

I honestly thought this photograph looked complete enough without any post-processing, other than cropping the time stamp out from the bottom.

In my camera bag

Since this picture was taken, I have upgraded the equipment in my bag quite a bit. I now use a Nikon D5100 with an extra 55-300mm lens for those long-distance photos. I also keep at least 2 extra SD cards, just in case I feel inspired to take more pictures than I originally expected.

Feedback

In my experience, the photographs that I love the most always come from unexpected moments, a test shot, a random animal swooping into my view, an attempt to see more detail in a building like Big Ben. So take a picture of everything, even if it wasn't part of your original plan, you just might love it.
