Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken at Lake Macquarie, NSW, Australia.

Time

The photo is taken later afternoon before the sunset on 9th December, 2013.

Lighting

As it was a cloudy day and the sun was not visible, I decide to shot long exposure to create the motion for the clouds and process in B&W to emphasis on the lines.

Equipment

Nikon D800 Nikon 16-35F4 VR lens set at 18mm, F11, ISO 100 and 143s of exposure. LEE GND soft edge 0.9 and LEE big stopper are used in this shot to achieve balanced exposure as well as long exposure time.

Inspiration

There are thousands of photos about jetties. After a few shots on the side of the jetty, I noticed the movement of the clouds. I frame the jetty right in the middle to match the movement of the clouds, which start in the middle of the frame and goes to the two up corners. This give the photo a bit mysterious sense like a space channel in science fiction movies.

Editing

The post processing is quite simple for this photo. I used photoshop CS6 to convert the image to B&W. A few brushes to adjust the brightness of various locations on the photo to get the feeling I want to achieve.

In my camera bag

I consider myself a landscape photographer. I normally cary nikons D800 with two lens. One wide angle and one telephoto. At the moment, they are Nikon 14-24 F2.8 and Nikon 70-200F4 lens. I also carry ND an GND filters for these lens and a steady tripod as well.

Feedback

There are so many landscape photos now a days and make shooting landscape photo meaningless to most people. I only take photos for fun and make myself satisfied is the key drive for me to keep going out and shooting during the day and night. Seascape is the main subject I am shooting. After 2 years, I realise that there are many different opportunities at the same location due to different light condition, composition, etc. A strong passion from inside of yourself is the only possibility to make you continue and improve yourselves.
