Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at home using my tabletop light box. I am always looking for ways to push my skill and learn how thing work. Days like this are an experiment, what will work and what doesn't. Through out this year I have been pushing myself to work in manual so that I can take control of everything. Quite often I don't get it right but learn from those photos to adjust my camera and get the shot I had in mind.

Time

It was early afternoon and I often work in the conservatory so that I can use a mixture of natural light and my off camera flash. I love working outside but really like the challenge of my little home studio.

Lighting

It was mid April so the light was soft. I was using the flash to see if this would add to the shot and if I could learn to balance it.

Equipment

Camera: Cannon EOS650D Lens: EF-S18-55mm (in other words my basic kit lens) I was using my extension tubes but which combination I cannot remember. Tripod, remote switch, and off camera flash. Tabletop light box White ceramic tile, liquid glycerine, and a piece of white mount board

Inspiration

I wanted to something with a feather, that was soft and had a droplet on it. I wanted to see if I could get the focus on the droplet and see what would show in it.

Editing

I did do some post editing using a ps express on my IPad. Not supper fancy just simple figure slides. Having played a little with the contrast and sharpening I then applied a very simple pink filter. This gave the shot that lift from something I liked to something I was really proud of.

In my camera bag

I don't own a vast amount of expensive equipment. I have 3 lenses. One a cheap 50mm prime lens, a zoom 70-300mm lens and the basic kit lens. I have an off camera flash with a remote control for on the camera and a very basic tripod.

Feedback

Be patient. Think about what is important to you for you final shot. Be prepared to improvise for a tabletop studio and use what you have around you.
