Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken alongside a river very near to where I live in Cape Town, South Africa. It's one of my favourite places to walk and photograph the bird life in the area.

Time

It was taken after 9am. I was having a walk alongside the river on a beautiful warm Autumn morning.

Lighting

Just wonderfully bright natural lighting.

Equipment

My Canon Powershot SX60 HS camera. handheld, no other equipment.

Inspiration

I am always looking out for birds or anything else that would inspire a photo attempt along my walks at the river or in nature in general. That morning I was just enjoying the warm sunshine when something caught my eye in one of the old trees near the riverbank, On going closer, I realised it was a bird of prey with a kill it was eating. I managed to get close enough not to scare it off and my zoom helped to get the picture. It stayed quite a while, so I was able to take a few shots, this turned out to be one of the better ones.

Editing

I only use Picassa on my (old) desktop to correct white balance, contrast, etc, and to crop if necessary.

In my camera bag

Just my camera : ) I recently bought a tripod, but have not tested it out for photo's yet! I am an artist with a love of photography, and I have set up a painting box on my tripod for painting outdoors : )

Feedback

A lot of patience and awareness and study of birds in their natural habitat helps with photographing birds. A good zoom lens helps too :) I recently bought this camera for it's large zoom feature which I am still learning to use, but it has been great in capturing the details and sharpness which I struggled with before. It's not a 'Birder-Pro' camera but mostly perfect for my needs.
