Location
The photo was taken in the beautiful valley of Rein in Taufers, which is found in the region of South Tirol, ItalyTime
I was up early to go cross county skiing on the freshly made tracks. Noticing the great light that morning, I grabbed my camera to take with me, this was the first shot I took on the walk down and was so happy I'd decided to do so. The shot was taken at around 08:30 on the 11th February 2016.Lighting
What caught my eye was the way the shadows softened the sharp harshness of the white snow. Really bringing out the curves of the hill side in the back ground and also the lovely bend the skiers are on.Equipment
Canon EOS 550D with a prime EF50mm f/1.8 II. With the plan to get a morning of Cross Country Skiing in myself I had chosen to go light, with nothing but camera and small prime lens.Inspiration
Where I took the photo lies towards the end of a large picturesque hanging valley, with imposing mountains all around. I had an idea of capturing the scale and magnificence in a more traditional landscape photograph. However the light and curves prompted a much more personal perspective of the area. Waiting for the skiers to come in to shot where they are, also gave the shot the more human feel and scale to the scene.Editing
Small changes in white balance and levels only, as well as slight cropping. In my camera bag
I prefer to go light as I like to combine my photography with outdoor pursuits or travel and don't want to have so much equipment as for it to become cumbersome. I've recently upgraded to a Canon 5d iii, lenses I will usually have a 50mm prime and a 24-70mm. depending on what I'm looking to shoot, I might take a 70-200mm. I rarely use a Tripod at the moment, although will occasionally take one with me if I have a exact shot I need it for.Feedback
It's good to have an idea for what type of image you want to take, however don't become to fixated on it. I find spontaneity feeds creativeness and often I get a much better unplanned shot than the one I had in my mind. That said the planning that goes into your vision of making sure your there at the right time with the right light is what is going to make everything come together.
