Behind The Lens

Location

This beautiful Pacific Banded snail caught my attention as my dog and I wandered through our Christmas tree patch one day this spring. I usually pack my camera when I walk my dog as this provides me an opportunity to capture shots that I might otherwise miss.

Time

Most often I walk my dog mid-morning or late afternoon; to the best of my memory it was early in the day when I captured this image

Lighting

It was one of those days when the natural light appeared to be perfect for capturing great images. I must say that I am pleased with the clarity and color of the image. Having no formal training and fairly basic equipment I rely on natural light to create the effect that I want in an image.

Equipment

The image was shot with a Canon EOS Rebel T5. Since I did not pack a tripod it was very difficult for me to steady the camera so I leaned against a tree and pressed the camera hard against my cheek. That seemed to work! The auto flash was on which may have provided the nice reflection on the snail.

Inspiration

I love the contrast between the smooth, shiny snail and the rough texture of the tree stem and its needles. That is what caught my attention and inspired me to capture the image.

Editing

I shot the image fairly close but cropped it a bit tighter.

In my camera bag

My camera bag has my Canon EOS T5 Rebel with its standard EFS 18-55mm lens. I also pack a Canon EF 70-300mm zoom lens as well as lens cleaner and tissue, and extra SD cards. I have fairly basic equipment but it serves me well. I could definately use a really good tripod though, and would be thrilled to own a really powerful telephoto lens.

Feedback

It is important to pack your gear, even when you are not planning a photo shoot. There is nothing more aggravating then having an opportunity to capture a unique image, and not having any equipment with you. If something attracts your attention, take a few moments out of your day, no matter how busy it is, and try to capture the essence of what it is that you see.
