Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in my tiny apartment in Paris, on a small sofa by the window overlooking the city roofs.

Time

It was shot at about 15.00, in the middle of the day, when the sun was high and its light was nicely diffused by the clouds. I plucked up all the courage I had and said to my wife: "Let's go for that nude session you wanted". Now? - she asked? - Why not!

Lighting

There's nothing here but natural light. The sun was hidden behind the clouds and was filling the room beautifully.

Equipment

I had my Panasonic GH4 that I also use for video. And a legacy lens SMC Takumar 50mm 1.4, which is very blurry wide open, so I closed it down a bit. It always produced unexpected results - sometimes the picture turns out better than expected, sometimes completely botched. I ended up giving it to my sister, but that's another story... The main thing is - this time it didn't disappoint.

Inspiration

I didn't intend to take this picture initially, my wife was just getting ready, adjusting her hair. By pure instinct I pushed the button on my camera.

Editing

As usual, I did some grading in Lightroom afterwards. Apart from increased contrast and saturation I also tried to convey more cold tones to the image. I ended up liking this setup so much that I created a preset that I called Nu. It usually doesn't work anywhere else, as I found out later, but for this particular session it did the trick perfectly.

In my camera bag

For street and travel photography I always carry a Fujifilm X100 with me as it's a perfect lightweight and compact camera, not to mention it's a marvel of retro design. But my professional tool is the GH4 with 3 lenses: 2.8mm 12-35, 2.8 mm 35-100 and 25mm 1.4, a kit that fits almost every situation I face in my job as a videographer (photography is still just a hobby for me now). I often have a light Manfrotto tripod on me, too - or at least a mini tripod with adjustable legs. You never know when you might need to shoot with long exposure or make an auto-portrait!

Feedback

If you have never done nude photography before (as I at that point), my only advice would be - if you have a model that won't mind, don't be shy and go for it! It'll be a very enriching experience for both of you. It's a big challenge even for experienced photographers, but the results are very rewarding - not to mention the process that will let you find out a lot of new stuff about yourself.
