Behind The Lens

Location

I actually took this photo at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I wish I could say I was out in the deep ocean on some exciting adventure but I was inside a dry safe aquarium with hundreds of other people strolling around looking at the exhibits.

Time

It was actually around 12:30 PM but it wasn't outside. It was indoors under artificial lights which the aquarium had provided. It could have been taken anytime of the day in those conditions.

Lighting

It was under very low lighting, with the exhibit being lit from within outside of view. The blue background was also part of the exhibit. Though the glass made it all but impossible to use any type of flash and I used the natural lighting which was provided. The difficult part in this type of lighting as other people using their own camera equipment with a flash which ended up spoiling a couple of shots as the flash bounced back off the glass of the aquarium.

Equipment

I used a 28mm-50mm Nikon zoom... wasn't I deal because my widest aperture was only f 3.5. I didn't have a tripod and ended up boosting my ISO to 3200 made the shot at 1/60 sec hand-held. It was a little too crowded to use a tripod in this situation and the greatest difficulty I had in taking this photo was other people viewing the exhibit, waiting the moment without someone's back, shoulder, head in the shot, or an inadvertent flash going off from another photographer.

Inspiration

Jellyfish are just beautiful creatures. Fascinating to watch and to view.

Editing

This shot has no post-processing done to it. I typically don't like to post-process my photos, if I can avoid it.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D700, I have 3 lenses which I typically carry Nikon 50mm f 1.8 ; Nikkor 28-50mm zoom f 3.5 ; and a Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5 -5.6. I aslo usually have a tripod with me. My bag is a Lowepro Flipside 400AW... great asset in crowded places because the access to my gear is on the inside of the backpack making it harder for would-be robbers access it's contents.

Feedback

Patience... especially in crowded places where people are not really considerate of a photographer trying to take picture is a big asset in places like this.
