Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a table in my apartment using a 12 x 12 inch mirror as the base. I simply cropped out the edges of the mirror in post processing.

Time

It was in the evening but since it was indoors, I had full control of conditions.

Lighting

I turned off the lights in my room and closed all the blinds. I then used a Ryobi shop light at a distance of about three feet to illuminate the marbles and create the reflection. When taking pictures like this, I like to use several different light sources to see what works best from a flashlight, a pen light, a studio light, a flash, a candle or as in this pictures, a hand held shop light. It's amazing how many different affects you can get with different light sources.

Equipment

For this I used my Cannon EOS Rebel but ordinarily I use a Nikon D750. I used the Cannon in this instance though because I was charging the batteries of my Nikon. ha, ha.

Inspiration

I saw a picture using reflection and loved it. I had some marbles and a small mirror and decided to see what I could do with them. I used a few different bases and lighting and this was one of my favorites.

Editing

I did some post processing to get rid of some dust on the mirror and a couple imperfections in the marbles. I enhanced the colors a little bit and that was it.

In my camera bag

Normally I carry my Nikon D750, an 18-105 mm lens, a 70 - 300 mm lens and a 50 mm lens. I usually also have two cleaning clothes, three batteries, a Go-Pro style camcorder, two memory cards, a TT1 Flash with a diffuser, and a 10 stop neutral density filter.

Feedback

Once you have everything set up, try different lights and light setups. See what looks and works best. I have multiple flashlights, some studio lights, both stand and tabletop and some candles and lighters. I try multiple light sources, sometimes more than one at once, and play around with the camera settings. Some lights are more white, some are more blue so you get a whole different result.
