Behind The Lens

Location

This is the Rockfeller Center in New York. I was there for work (I'm a software engineer, not a professional photographer), so, like any tourist, I visited and took pictures.

Time

It was in the afternoon of my first day in New York. I had just landed a few hours ago, this is one of my first pictures over there.

Lighting

You always hear about the golden and the blue hours and, yes, those are great moments to take pictures because the light can be amazing but when your time in a place is limited, you can't always wait to shoot. "Simple" daylight has to do and that's ok, you can still take great pictures. I think this one turned out ok, even though the sky was still high in the sky (well, high for end of January).

Equipment

Canon 6D with a Canon 16-35L F2.8, no tripod.

Inspiration

It was my first time in New York so everything was new to me even though, at the same time, I already knew everything from TV series and movies. We can see all those tall buildings on television but standing next to them make you realize how big they really are, hence this photo.

Editing

I always edit my pictures with Lightroom. In this case, I had to reduce highlights to darken the sky and lighten the shadows to make everything visible. Then I added some contrast and adjusted the colours.

In my camera bag

My current camera is a Canon 6D. When I travel I always have these 3 lenses with me so I'm ready for everything: Canon 16-35L F2.8, Tamron 24-70 F2.8 and Canon 70-300L F4-5.6. I have a 16Go SD card and a few 2Go just in case. I also have a second battery to be safe. I also have a tripod (Manfrotto) but I don't always take it with me.

Feedback

Travel, open your eyes and, when you see something interesting, take a picture! Among those, many will be bad, you won't even edit them, some will be good and a few will end up being very good. Don't be afraid to try things, SD cards are big enough, you'll see what works and what doesn't.
