Location
In my hometown there is an indoor butterfly park where one can experience the entire life cycle of butterflies. There are sometimes as many as 800 insects in the flight room at once. It is a very soothing place kept at about 80 degrees and filled with indiginous plants.Time
This photo was taken in the afternoon when the butterflies are especially active.Lighting
I did not use a flash on this shot. All of the lighting is natural light that comes through the transparent ceiling of the flight room. There is a filter on the ceiling so as not to expose the insects to direct sunlight.Equipment
Nikon D40, handheldInspiration
I was fascinated with the moment when a butterfly first takes flight and it took several tries to capture it at just that moment. It invokes both a feeling of freedom and the memory of my young children taking their first steps.Editing
Adjusted the brightness only in Photoshop as the original exposure was slightly dark.In my camera bag
Nikon D40, an extra 50mm lens and backup batteries and cards.Feedback
