Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this unforgettable moment just southeast of a small town called Fillmore in Saskatchewan, Canada. I was using a beginner level DSLR with the stock 18-55mm lens but wish I had my wide angle at this time.

Time

This storm formed in the mid afternoon hours over south-central Saskatchewan. It went through various weakening and strengthening cycles before forming this gorgeous shelf cloud structure about an hour before sunset at 8pm.

Lighting

Most of the storms always become extremely photogenic during the sunset golden hours. This storm was no exception as it displayed one of the best structures ever seen in southern Saskatchewan just before sunset. The rain-filtered hue of the sun combined with the yellow canola on the ground formed a mesmerizing view.

Equipment

I shot this with my Pentax k200D and the stock 18-55mm lens. Because of the time limit while capturing storms shots it is sometimes quite difficult to use tripods. In this case I was left with the only choice of snapping a hand-held shot as the storm kept roaring towards me. I never use flash while snapping these pictures.

Inspiration

Every thunderstorm have unique structures and photographing them has always been my passion. Whenever a storm forms on a day with some great upper air dynamics (that causes storms to form some amazing structures), I make sure to be there for it and follow as closely as possible. This was just another day when I finally found my reward at the end of the day after successfully using my experience and following my instinct all day. These are the moments which can never be repeated.

Editing

My DSLR has a really bad habit of putting a significant amount of grain noise when shots are taken during very cloudy twilight hours. Because I only had my stock lens, there was not much I could do to minimize the issue by a better lens either. I had to perform some noise reduction on the shot afterwards with minimal damage to the details. I also did a bit of contrast and clarity enhancement during post processing.

In my camera bag

All I had at that time was my DSLR camera attached with the stock lens and nothing else. Currently I have only added a wide angle lens to my collection and that's about it.

Feedback

I would highly recommend to use a camera which can go to higher ISO (with least amount of noise) or the use of a low light lens. A tripod that is quick release can also come quite handy in situations like these.
