Location
I captured this building while standing on the sidewalk of Columbus St., San Francisco, in an area called Little Italy.Time
This image was captured mid morning. I had dropped my daughter off at an appointment that she had in San Francisco. This left me a few hours to spare and I wanted to shoot this building once again. I say once again because I had shot this building before but it was in combination with the Transamerica Building contrasting old vs. new. After studying a few of the images I had previous taken I realized that this building was worthy of it's own shoot so I went and spent some time shooting this building.Lighting
This was captured with natural lighting. That being said, many times shooting natural lighting in San Francisco can be like shooting in a giant soft box. There was high fog filtering out all of the harsh light.Equipment
I primarily shoot with a Canon 7D, I have a number of lenses and always use a tripod when shooting architectural images. I put the camera in a mirror up position and use a remote shutter release so that I have minimal movement with the camera.Inspiration
I just loved the architectural style of this building. The color, style, location, of this building has drawn me to it a number of times.Editing
I do have a somewhat standard post processing work flow in Lightroom that I use. I start out bringing the highlights all of the way down and bringing the shadows all the way up. After that I adjust the whites to bring the brightness up to the edge of the histogram. At this point the image will look pretty bad until you bring the black down. By doing this you create a nice contrast with better control of the details. In my camera bag
My camera bag is pretty heavy. I'm always afraid that if I leave something behind it will be the one thing that I wish I had when I get on location. I carry the 7D with three lenses, A wide angle 10-22, a 120-300 zoom and 28-135 zoom and a 120 to 300 zoom.On top of that I carry a speedlight, tripod, multiple filters including a polarizer and ND filter.Feedback
My advise for anyone trying to capture an image like this would be pretty much the same as any advise you've seen anywhere else. Get to know your subject. Study it and try to picture in your mind the shot you want to capture ahead of time.
