Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in a small studio I made inside the front room of my house. I really love the natural lighting that comes in from the location of the room so it's a perfect place to get that awesome creamy white background on a budget!

Time

Most of my white background photos were taken around 1-2pm when the sun is nice and bright but diffused through the sheer curtains I put up. It has a great soft box effect.

Lighting

I'm a huge fan of natural lighting. If I could give any advice on it it would be practice, practice, practice and experiment. Lighting was one of the hardest things for me to catch onto when I was first starting out but once I get the hang of it was amazing how much my photography improved.

Equipment

I used my Canon 6D with a 50mm 1.8

Inspiration

My dogs are the best part of my day. Each and every one of them has a huge personality and I love to capture them whenever I can. My favorite time to take photos of them is when they are sleepy and relaxed. Forced poses never translate into good photos.

Editing

I do my basic editing in camera raw and then add any effects or modifications in on photoshop. I'm a minimalist when it comes to post processing. I like clean vibrant and modern images and I find that too many effects is not always better.

In my camera bag

My canon 50mm 1.8, Sigma 85mm 1.4, a dual sided reflector, small step ladder (maybe not so much in my bag!), extra sd cards and extra batteries!

Feedback

When you're trying to capture dogs or pets in general it's best to do it when they're relaxed and natural. I have a set of wood floor planks that I put down with a fuzzy piece of fabric that contrasts well with their coat color or a soft blanket and will usually hangout on my computer until they get nice and comfortable on it and will start snapping photos so that they don't feel like I'm making them do something they don't want to.
